Dr. Joy Coline Pickstock, DDS; MSc.(lond.), FACD

Dr. Joy Pickstock is a 1976 graduate of Queen’s College High School, Nassau, Bahamas . Following her matriculation she enrolled into The College of The Bahamas until Spring of 1978 and following entered Tennessee State University, Nashville Tennessee as a Medical Technology major. In 1981, Dr. Pickstock graduated from Tennessee State University and Meharry Medical College with a Bachelor of Science degree and a Certification in Medical Technology from Meharry Medical College. She returned home to The Bahamas in 1981 and was employed for a short time as a Medical Technologist at the Princess Margaret Hospital .

In 1982, Dr. Pickstock enrolled in the School of Dentistry, Meharry Medical College Nashville, Tennessee and graduated in 1986 as the First Bahamian female dentist of the institution. After serving in the Ministry of Health, Bahamas Public Health Service for seven years, Dr. Pickstock was granted the Commonwealth Scholarship Award in 1994 and pursued specialty training in Dental Public Health, obtaining a Master of Science degree, MSc.(lond.) from The University of London, Eastman Dental Institute.

Dr. Pickstock, has been practicing dentistry in The Bahamas for over 30 years in both public and private sectors. She currently holds the position of Dental Consultant and holds the distinction of being the first Bahamian female dentist employed within the government service and the only trained specialist in Public Health Dentistry. In 2002 she was the youngest health professional honored as a ‘Health Hero, during the 100th Anniversary of The Pan American Health Organization, for contributions in the field of dentistry. Presently deployed at the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, as Dental Consultant Surgeon in charge, she has been instrumental in the initiation, implementation and organization of the dental services division at Coral Harbor Base. In addition, Dr. Pickstock, has been involved in academics as the first Dental Associate Professor, Success Training College and Instructor at The College of The Bahamas Continuing Education Department.

As Founder, Director and CEO of Faith Dental Centre, Dr. Pickstock has worked in private practice for over 30 years providing dental health services to the people of The Bahamas. She believes in the optimal oral health and welfare of persons and particularly that of the children. As part of her community service, Faith Dental Centre has over two decades adopted the Albania Christian Academy Preschool, to which she and her staff have been providing oral health care and support to Albania’s staff and students.

Actively involved in organized dentistry since 1986, Dr. Pickstock has held every position within The Bahamas Dental Association, and has been one of the key organizers of almost all conferences held by the BDA in the past 30 years. In 2007, 2009 and 2012, Dr. Pickstock was honored by the Bahamas Dental Association with the President’s Award in recognition of unselfish and dedicated leadership in dentistry in The Bahamas and the Region. In 2015 she was recognized by the Bahamas Dental Association for over 20 years as the associations’ representative to the World Dental Federation as National Secretary.

In addition to her involvement in the local association, Dr. Pickstock has served as an executive member of several regional and international dental organizations including; The Bahamas Dental Council, The Caribbean Atlantic Regional Dental Association (CARDA) and The World International Dental Federation (FDI). In October 2012, she was the recipient of the Fellow of the American College of Dentists (FACD), award, and becomes only the second Bahamian dentist and first Bahamian female dentist to receive such a prestigious honor. In 2017 she was honored by Celebrating Women International, Women of Distinction, with the 2017 Global Leadership Award in Medicine for her many achievements in dentistry both local and international.

She is the daughter of the late Elder Edney and Mrs. Emma Pickstock formerly of North Andros, Bahamas and has one daughter, Jazmyn.
